We’ve got a new forum and comments system: join us!

Hello regular readers of htxt.africa. We polled you for feedback recently and you told us that you wanted us to interact with you more. As part of our ongoing mission to do just that, we have some great news for you today. We’re launching an awesome new discussion platform which combines a funky modern forum with our site commenting system, so that you lot can talk among yourselves or reply to our posts and it all ends up in one unified opinion-o-base.

Existing comments have been archived, so you can’t reply directly to them, but they do appear above the new comments so that we can keep ongoing discussions moving for as long as possible.

The technical stuff

So what have we done? Like many blogs out there, htxt.africa is powered by WordPress’ CMS. Words, perhaps, to strike fear into the heart of our more technical readers but while WordPress has its drawbacks, it is relatively easy to administer with a small team like ours and creating posts and uploading contents is fast and simple for non-technical writers.

Plus we get to draw upon the experience of the massive FOSS community which contributes to WordPress for security updates and the like.

The new commenting and forum system is powered by Vanilla Forums – you’ll see the logo underneath the commentary box. It works just like the old comments system, except that you will need to sign-in in order to leave a comment. Don’t worry – you can use OpenID, Google or Twitter to do this. We’ll be adding Facebook As soon as we can figure out why the redirects aren’t working.

If you want to dive straight into discussion, you can go to the forum index here and browse by category, date or keyword. Alternatively, you can create a new discussion topic from under any post using the big and obvious button marked for this purpose.

Eventually, we’re going to try and bring the forum into the same look and feel as the site itself. But in the meantime. Just relax and enjoy.

If you’ve got any comments, praise, criticism or bug reports, feel free to drop us a line here. Or better yet, post in our new forums…

We’ve got a load more feature planned for the forums, including special prizes for contributors in the Deals section and community mods as and when we need them. For the time being, though, get chatting!
