Wow, the next Lord of the Rings game really does look like Assassin’s Creed

Footage of pre-alpha gameplay from Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor has appeared on the official Xbox YouTube channel, and boy does it look quite a bit like Assassin’s Creed. That’s not a bad thing, per se, because AC games have been pretty good, on the whole, but it’s a surprise considering this new LoTR game isn’t being developed by Ubisoft – it’s being published by Warner Bros. Games, and made by Monolith Productions.

Take a look at the footage below, and tell me I’m not crazy. I’m pretty sure I can see Assassin’s Creed’s roof-running mechanic, its approach to stealth, its combat mechanics and even the same connections between buildings in this entirely-unrelated game. There’s even a slow-motion leap assassinationkill in there, and an instinct-like mode that highlights enemies and objects in the game world.

Take it all together, and Shadows of Mordor really does seem like a copy-paste of ACs core mechanics, just dressed up in different clothes.

Deon got his first taste of PC gaming at the tender age of 11 when his father bought an 8088 XT, ostensibly to "help him with his homework". Instead, it introduced him to Leisure Suit Larry, King Graham, Sonny Bonds and many more, and Deon has been a PC gamer and hardware enthusiast ever since. He landed his first professional writing gig in 2006 at a prestigious local PC magazine, a very happy happenstance as he got to write for a living about things he loves - tech, PCs, gaming, and everything in between. He's been writing about it all ever since, and loves every minute of it.
