Check out this beautiful 3D printed flower that blooms

There’s nothing quite like owning a 3D printer. Experience of building my own RepRap Prusa Mendel over the last year and a half has taught me that owning one is a labour of love and an exercise in frustration. It’s like owning a classic car (another venture from which I bear the scars). Even the best of them require constant tinkering and are likely to break down for no apparent reason. If you don’t have the patience of Robert Persig when it comes to troubleshooting stuff, don’t bother.

But if you do, they are capable of beautiful things. Like my new boldly coloured Bauhaus chess set, or fixing bomb victims’ limbs in the Sudan. Or this amazing 3D printed flower, which was produced in a single print and blossoms when you inflate it from below.

It’s made by a clever chap called Richard Clarkson. He has a website all about it. You can find some stonking images here, along with an explanation as to why this flower is so difficult to print and yet so important a landmark (printing airtight hinges? Quite hard really).

Watch the video below and marvel.
