Facebook Paper will become your next morning read

Just in time for it’s 10th birthday, on the 4th of February, Facebook has announced the next generation app that people will be using to read their feeds.

It’s called Facebook Paper, and it’s part of the company’s new approach to the mobile landscape. It announced earlier this week that it would be taking the approach of breaking out each of its core functions into separate apps, rather than having one app to do it all. It already has strong adoption of the Facebook Messenger app, but Facebook Paper will take over your feed – and deliver it in a brand new way.

Anybody who’s used Flipboard will be familiar with the concept Paper uses to approach your Facebook news feed. Rather than having a very web-like, vertical interface you just scroll down, it presents multiple stories on screen at once. This interface is then scrolled through horizontally, but the whole experience looks far prettier, and is more geared towards a generation that’s become used to sharing their experiences with photos. There’s even an option that lets users tilt their phones from side-to-side, for viewing landscape or panoramic photos.

It’s not just about news and feeds from your friends, though. Paper will also let users add other topics to their feeds – including content from news providers and curators. In the introduction video on the Paper site it shows the whole lot in action, including a very, very BlackBerry 10-like interface with dragging windows up to expand them.

Paper is not only a new app, it’s a completely new user interface and way to experience Facebook. With the most-used features packed in here, there’s a good chance it could replace the Facebook app as your go-to place for socialiising.

The new app releases on Monday, 3rd February – so keep an eye out for our full walkthrough, with tips and tricks.
