Nvidia’s first 64-bit processor breaks cover at CES

Nvidia has used the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to announce a new version of its Tegra mobile processors for the past few years and this year is no different. Meet the Nvidia Tegra K1, the first 64-bit model from Nvidia. When Apple released the new iPhone in September last year they laid claim to the first 64-bit powered smartphone, it was followed by the announcement of Qualcomm’s first 64-bit processor late last year, the Snapdragon 410. Interestingly all three of these processors are of the dual-core variety in a world where four and even eight core processors have become common place. While Apple has never been one to get in on the specifications war that often encompasses the mobile space, it would seem that both Qualcomm and Nvidia are using their first forays into 64-bit processing to power lower end devices.

Nvidia isn’t just relying on the one model of processor though with a second 32-bit processor also going under the same name. The processor will use Nvidia’s 4+1 core architecture which pairs four high powered cores with a fifth low power core that handles the mundane tasks that would otherwise cause battery loss if the bigger cores were activated to take care of. The new processors will both be using the Kepler graphics cores that Nvidia uses in its desktop graphics cards and it will mean that both processors are capable of DirectX 11 level graphics as well as using the OpenGL 4.4 protocol and the new Unreal Engine 4 to power games. If all of those are too technical then just take a look at the video below that Nvidia put together to show off the graphics prowess of the new chips.
