New Windows CEO version codename revealed as Nadella

Did you see it? After playing the Microsoft boss for over fourteen years – the second longest period for an actor to fulfil that role – Steve Ballmer’s turn as CEO of Microsoft came to an end this evening about a month after most people were expecting it. The new series of the show has kicked off with Ballmer regenerating into Satya Nadella, who is best known for his role as executive vice president of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group. Nadella immediately donned an unexpectedly simple and conservatively tasteful suit and said that he would be shunning the over-the-top and slightly childish antics of his predecessor.

Waitaminute… I’m confusing this with something else, aren’t I?

Microsoft has a new boss. Steve Ballmer has stepped down and this man has taken over.

Satya Nadella is apparently “honoured, humbled and excited” to be heading up Microsoft, with plans to “ruthlessly remove any obstacles that allow us to innovate”.  That’s around 2.40 in the video above. Thus he kicks off his tenure with a grammatical error which is almost exactly the opposite of what we assume he wanted to say.

Snarking aside, he sums up his vision for Microsoft as the “do more” company – a snappy phrase which means if you use its tools, you should be able to “do more”.

Nadella’s background is as a loyal Microsoft veteran, who’s been with the company since 1992. Many pundits thought that the MS board would choose an outsider, but on the whole Nadella’s appointment has been broadly welcomed. Nadella’s division has been one of the success stories internally, even if his profile to the outside world has been relatively low.

Nadella will be the third person to run Microsoft, although we understand that his working title will be formally replaced by the formal nomenclature of ‘Modern CEO’ in all company literature. Rumours are already swirling, however, that Nadella.1 will restore the much missed ‘Crazy Dance’ mode to the executive Start screen.

At the same time, Microsoft has also said that version one of the CEO, Bill Gates, is being removed from the archives where he currently serves as Chairman of the board in order to be reinstalled in a new, more hands-on role as Technology Advisor. John Thompson will take Gates’ old place.

Perhaps that means that if businesses don’t like Nadella, they’ll be allowed to downgrade with the same licence?
