BlackBerry CEO says he’d sell BBM for $19 billion

After Facebook’s much talked about acquisition of WhatsApp, BlackBerry’s CEO, John Chen, has said he would be willing to sell BBM if an offer to buy it for $19 billion were to be put forward.

“I work for the shareholder. Standard answer. If somebody comes to me with $19 billion, I would definitely sell it. I would recommend to the board to take it,” Chen said in an exclusive interview with CNBC at the Mobile World Congress.

WhatsApp has over 450 million users worldwide, while BBM only has 85 million users and is estimated to be worth $3.4 billion.

“I know there’s a lot of value in messaging businesses,” Chen said. “I think the right thing to do is to expand that and market as big as possible and then I [will] worry about the valuation later.”
