Knights of the Old Republic series getting a fan-made third game

Fans of LucasArts’ Knights of the Old Republic RPGs are getting together to make a third game in the series, entirely on their own and with no blessing from any official source.

According to Iamasupernerd.com, they’re not just any fans, these are industry insiders, people with the skills, contacts and know-how needed to pull off this ambitious project. They plan to use the original production plans and notes to make a genuine third entry in the franchise, all under the codename “Project Blacklight”.

It was somewhat surprising to many when, back in the early 2000s, the world of Star Wars proved fertile grounds for a traditional role-playing game, as proved by the success and popularity of both KOTOR I and II. (Even more surprising was the absence of a third game, a move that would logically have been smart on LucasArts’ part.)

The Iamasupernerd.com article features a lengthy interview with some of the people involved with Project Blacklight, and it is full of fascinating insights into why KOTOR 3 never happened, what PB’s plans are for Revan (one of the most popular characters in the game whose story was never wrapped up) and how the team is going about ensuring the new game will be true to the spirit of the first two.

There are no screenshots, assets or a projected release date to share at the moment, but this is good news for Star Wars fans nonetheless. At the very least it gives fans hope that, should the 2015 movie be a disappointment, there is at least something else Star Wars-themed to look forward to.
