6 South Africans make it into Google’s Africa Connected Semi-Finals

Last August, Google Africa launched the Africa Connected competition, in search of Africans who wanted to tell their stories about how their lives and professional and chartiable work have been changed by the web and Google services.

Today the company announced the 20 finalists it has chosen from over 2 200 entries across 35 countries on the continent and among them are six young South Africans.

Megan Makhosazana Ngiba, Barbara Mallinson, Timothy Maguire, Johann du Toit, Theunis Hanekom and Mbekezeli Khumalo will be competing with the 14 other finalists to be among the final 5 winners who will receive a grand prize which includes $25 000 (R278 000) and the opportunity to work with a Google sponsor over a six-month period to further their online business success.

“We’re excited to see strong South African representation, no less than six out of 20, among the semifinalists.  To mention just some of them, Obami is using YouTube to empower teachers and learners; Grace Communion is using Google Translate to aide humanitarian work in neighbouring Mozambique; and Red Fish is making the most of various technologies to create new job marketplace for registered tradespeople,” said Luke Mckend, Country Director, Google South Africa.

A panel of judges made up of Googlers and external judges, will select 10 finalists and the five winners will be voted for by the public via online voting. The winners will be announced on April 1st at an event in Nairobi, Kenya.
