The Batmobile is driveable in the next Batman game

Yesterday saw the announcement of the next Batman game, titled Batman: Arkham Knight. It’s coming later this year for PS4, Xbox One and PC, but more important than the game’s existence is the fact that for the first time in the Arkham series, the Batmobile will be driveable.

That’s because Arkham Knight is going to have a bigger map than Arkham City did and wider roads on which to drive the iconic car. Finally!

The whole reveal was kicked off early by an accidental leak by UK retailer GAME, which posted a pre-order page for the game on its website along with a synopsis that called it “the explosive Finale in the Batman Arkham Series”.

And then game magazine Game Informer revealed its April cover on its website, featuring none other than everyone’s favourite crime-fighting rubber fetishist in a huge announcement of the latest game to feature him and his head-cracking, free-flowing fisticuffs.

Interestingly, the website article also said that Rocksteady Studios is back on development duty, a relief to fans after Warner Brothers Montreal cranked out Batman: Arkham Origins, the lowest-scoring of the first three Arkham games according to Metacritic.

What has me excited, is that the article said with this being the last of the Arkham games that Rocksteady will “raise the bar even higher” in order to go out in style. So whatever is going to happen in the game, you can be assured it’s going to be huge.

The villains that Bats will be up against this last time include Scarecrow, Penguin, Harley Quinn and Two-Face as well as a host of others. No doubt Joker will make an appearance, as he always seems to do, and of course their over-arching objective will be to deal with The Bat once and for all. Hah. As if successful comic book characters can ever truly die while there is still money to be milked from their battered, bleeding bodies.

Anyway, cynicism aside, this last Batman game looks quite promising, despite the rather awkward name. The studio behind it has a great track record, they appear keen to make a big splash as the curtain comes down on this particular chapter in Batman’s mythology, and they’re finally putting in the Batmobile.

What can go wrong?
