Microsoft drops price of Office 365 [UPDATE: SA launch window & pricing]

Until now Microsoft’s subscription version of its Office productivity suite has only come in two flavours for non-business users, Office 365 Home Premium and Office 365 University, but later this year a new, cheaper option will arrive called Office 365 Personal.

Office 365 Personal will allow users to install the full version of Microsoft Office on one PC or Mac as opposed to the five installs that you receive with a Home Premium subscription. The cost for the annual subscription will come down from $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year for Home Premium to $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year for Home Personal in the US which is a 30% saving. Using our rudimentary maths skills, that would make the price in South Africa R52.50 a month or R525 a year based on our R749 annual Home Premium subscription.

UPDATE: Microsoft South Africa has confirmed that Office 365 Personal will launch in South Africa in the coming months with a, rather expensive, expected recommended retail price between R649 – R699.

The Office 365 package for University students will still offer two installs of the Office suite at a massively reduced R699 subscription for four years and all of them will offer the same free 20GB of Microsoft OneDrive storage and 60 minutes of Skype World calling that they have in the past.

While the new Office 365 Personal will allow installation of Office on one tablet as well it was not clear whether it would still offer the ability to use Office on iPhone or Office for Android smartphone which both launched last year. That tablet installation is of course on available for Windows RT tablets and not for iPads or Android tablets, which have both had long rumoured Office applications coming to them.
