Acer tablet compo winners revealed

The time has come. We know a lot of you are interested in this one and have been chasing us for an answer – so here it is, the two lucky winners of our competition to win a pair of Acer W511 tablet computers revealed.

But you don’t get away that easily. Oh no. A little pre-amble first.

The reason it’s taken us a full two weeks to choose a winner is that this was one of our most popular competitions to date, so thank you very much to all who entered and you’ve made the morning brighter by letting us read your entries. It’s also, however, made it darned hard to pick winners, as there really were a lot of good answers.

The task we set you was simple: complete the sentence “With an Iconia I can…” The replies were amazingly varied, both in tone and length.

To all the many readers who decided that they would use the W511 to take over the world, we admire your megalomaniac aspirations but couldn’t allow you to win as you would surely have been disappointed. As cool as the tablet is, it’s still merely one tablet – Archimedes claimed that all he needed was a long enough lever to move the world, but since he didn’t account for the vacuum of space and nothing to stand on, he was wrong too.

The reader who promised to use the tablet to take a lot more selfies? Very contemporary, but we can’t encourage that sort of flagrant public behaviour. In a similar vein the judges warmed to the sentiment of the man who wanted to ‘beat up iPad owners’ with the hard edges of a Windows slate. But we can’t be seen to condone violence.

The tech doctor is in

Given the timing of the competition we also appreciated the motivation behind the comments about Eskom and battery life and being able to work while the power’s out. Ultimately, though, rewarding those comments would simply be treating the symptoms, not the cause.

Many of you talked about how a tablet would help your studies, and came very close to winning as a result. What worthier cause could there be for us to reward? And yes, digital textbooks are less likely to cause sciatica later in life. Sadly, we just couldn’t choose between you all.

To the man who wanted it to use his tablet as a remote security tool for monitoring his home alarm system after three break-ins in one year – apologies. We do feel your pain. You came very close.

To the other man who decided that ‘Making your wife happy’ by giving her a prize was going to win us over – sorry, that’s your job, sir.

Lots of students told us how carrying a tablet rather than bulky textbooks would change their lives for the better

To the entrant who wanted to simply ‘achieve synergy’: just no.

Just tell us who won!

So, you’ve got this far, you probably want to know who the winners are. Given the mix of entries – some very heartwrenching – we decided that the first tablet should be awarded to the ‘worthy’ entry which best caught our eye. For which we say congratulations to Dieter Deppish who answered:

With an Iconia I can teach previously disadvantaged deaf adults and children with educational sign language videos in their own homes/shacks.

Impossible to pass over an opportunity to help, really. We hope that Mr Deppish will stay in touch and keep us updated on exactly how this work progresses (although he’s under no obligation, obviously).

And our second winner was drawn from the many, many more entries that inspired or made us laugh. And ultimately it had to be the disarmingly honest Zaid Kriel who clearly knows something we don’t about the state of Artificial Intelligence research up at CSIR.

With an Iconia I can hack into Skynet and upload Gunta worm algorithm. With that active it will send out a shutdown signal to all Terminators and HK on Skynet’s network. The shutdown will only last 7.45 minutes before Skynet reboots. But with the Iconia I should be able to do another hack in that time frame; into the power grid and reboot that. With the power grid rebooting as well, Skynet won’t be able to restart the Terminators and HK’s for at least 45 minutes. That is our window to attack and turn the tide in the man/machine war.
It’s either that or watch One Direction fan videos on YouTube. I mean it could go either way.

You’ll notice our future competitions all have word limits on entries.

Congratulations to our winners and to the rest of you, want to win more stuff? We’re currently running the competition of the century over here – win yourself a South African designed 3D printer!
