Eskom: Wet coal may cause power outs

The spectre of electricity load shedding has raised its head this morning, as Eskom is warning that the unseasonably heavy rain has left coal stocks wet and put unexpected strain on an energy system which is already close to capacity.

The state-owned supplier issued a warning at 6am this morning asking all customers to try and reduce their energy use, and industrial customers to cut back by 10% from 8am.

“Eskom calls on consumers to urgently switch off geysers, pool pumps and all non-essential appliances
this morning to prevent the need for rotational load shedding,” the firm says in a press statement.

The company does have a website with more information, http://loadshedding.eskom.co.za/, but when we checked this morning it was running very slowly.

According to media reports via SAPA, Free State customers are being singled out with particular pleas to switch off any unused appliances.
