Getty Images pulls out of Flickr partnership

Image library Getty is back in the headlines. Just a few days after the stock photo specialist announced that it would be making 35 million pictures royalty free for editorial and personal use, it has today revealed that it’s ending its six-year partnership with Flickr. Under the terms of the partnership, Getty curated a ‘best of’ collection of images from the photo sharing site and handled licensing duties, allowing Flickr members to earn money from their shots.

According to Amateur Photographer, Flickr users who were part of the exclusive Getty group received an email explaining that although the partnership was ending, it would continue to licence the 30 000 images already in its collection.

In the email Getty state that it has “provided notice to terminate [its] existing agreement with Flickr”.

The email also goes on to stress that this would not impact their existing contracts with contributors. The idea of the agreement was to allow Getty to tap into the amazing talent of some of Flickr’s users and provide them an opportunity to become Getty image photographers.

The images that make up the current “Flickr Collection” on Getty will be rebranded as a new house collection called “Moment”. This collection will rely on submissions and go through a more regular stock image library assessment process. A mobile application that allows people to view the collection is also apparently in the works.
