Lazygamer asks for readers’ help to cover libel fees

Popular South African games blog Lazygamer.net is asking readers to help raise funds to help its ongoing legal battle with the general secretary of gaming association Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA). Lazygamer editor Gavin Mannion was in the Gauteng High Court today, defending himself against charges of defamation brought by Colin Webster of MSSA.

Webster brought the case against Mannion following multiple articles on the Lazygamer.net gaming blog in which Mannion’s criticised both MSSA and Webster directly, accusing the organisation of a lack of transparency and not acting in gamers’ best interests.

Webster alleges that Mannion and Lazygamer’s actions have gone from merely reporting on the MSSA to attacking him personally, which is defamation territory and a legally-actionable offence. So convinced is he, that he has taken Mannion and Lazygamer to court over it in his personal capacity.

Mannion’s Twitter feed indicated that the case was postponed this morning, pending a further hearing on 22nd May. Webster’s lawyers apparently applied for a delay in the proceedings to consider an affidavit supplied by Mannion last week.

In a post on Lazygamer.net this afternoon, he said that:

The case has been postponed until the 22nd of May as we got our responding affidavit to his initial affidavit to his lawyers on the night of Friday the 15th of March and they, fairly, felt that they haven’t had enough time to read and prepare for today.

The delay has, however, raised Mannion’s legal fees. To help alleviate those, he has started a donation campaign on Lazygamer in which he says any amount over R300 will earn the donor a “free” t-shirt with a logo that says “I helped save Lazygamer’s bacon” printed on it.

Shirts are available in sizes from S to XXL, they are made from 180gsm Vic Bay Cotton, are entirely South African-made and can be ordered here if you feel like helping out. Alternatively, you can just send cash; Mannion’s banking details are can be found on the Lazygamer post detailing the latest update.
