LEGO Oscar Pistorius trial now on Instagram

A four-month-old Instagram account has seen an explosion in interest today because of the main protagonist in all of its pictures, a LEGO version of Oscar Pistorius. The account bio reads: “Just a feed about a little LEGO who ridiculously resembles the one & only Oscar Pistorius – from a fan, runner & LEGO junkie”.

The legopistorius Instagram account has over 400 images posted to it, however its only since the start of court proceedings on the 3rd of March that the scenes depicted in each photo have changed a random series of pictures featuring the likes of Star Trek character and Gollum from the Lord of the Rings movies, to recreating scenes from the court case which has garnered world-wide notoriety. The account has almost doubled its following from around 770 this morning to just over 1 400 at the moment.

After facing questions over his seemingly rather pro-Oscar stance the creator of the Instagram account posted a picture with this comment:

I’ve never said that Pistorius is innocent of murder. He’s not. But the bottom line is the prosecution has to prove premeditated murder, thus far neighbor witnesses all heard different things that night. That in my opinion causes doubt that there is so far no clear-cut version out there for anyone to be locked away for life. But the trial has just started, we’ve only glimpsed at the defense teams angle and the prosecution could have a massive play just waiting. We live in a civilized world, no matter the crime everyone deserves their day in court. When I see and read about people wanting to convict without a trial, it terrifies me. Some have viewed this Instagram as wrong, I initially began this as a “photo a day” parody concept, but now I’ve obviously chosen to mimic the real world for the most part. Those that think it’s obscene, it’s not so different than many media outlets who have recreated 3D video models of the murder scene itself and played out multiple scenarios. I for one would never go that far. We all have creative outlets, this is one of mine that I realize may ruffle feathers. Good, it keeps you talking about current events and if it solicits such a strong emotion that you find it distasteful, the block button is a simple click away. If I come across as snarky, I am a little. I’ve received menacing messages and threats over a LEGO figure. It’s no secret that I am a fan of what Pistorius has accomplished in his RUNNING CAREER. As a beginning runner, he gave me that motivation to not hold back and fully invest in a sport I love. When I lived in South Africa I started running literally after learning about him, I’m thankful for the motivation. I have no hero complex, I realize Pistorius is just a man with his own flaws but as I was not there that terrible night… I sensibly just choose to not to jump on a mob-mentality bandwagon. It seems many people consider themselves forensic experts from years of watching crime shows that they feel they are justified in demanding a conviction without a trial. That in my opinion is what’s really obscene.

The LEGO figurine was made by the team at minifigs.me who create custom-made LEGO minifigures to order as well as those based on public figures like the Royal family. minifigs.me no longer sells the Paralympian’s likeness on its site.

While some may find the account to lack any tact or sensitivity with regards to the fact that it creates a light-hearted side to a trial dealing with a case that involves the killing of Reeva Steenkamp, the account’s creator was considerate enough to put up a blank image on the anniversary of the day of the incident.
