Local maths institute sets up Indiegogo campaign for girls in STEM competition

The MathsGenius Leadership Institute (MGLI), a school based in Midrand, has set up a campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds for its GirlChild Rise Up in STEM Competition under its GirlChild empowerment project.

The GirlChild Rise Up in STEM Competition calls on boys and girls in Grades 8 to 10 to design a cover for the book ‘GirlChild Rise Up in STEM’, a motivational book written by MGLI CEO, Edzai Conilias Zvobwo, that aims to encourages girls and women to take up STEM subjects and careers in South Africa.

Learner’s cover designs should fall under one of three themes: Feminine Power, Freedom and Ability. Twenty seven provincial winners will be invited for a cover exhibition on October 11 (International Girl Child Day) where they will be able to auction off or sell their designs to the attendees.

Two national winners will be determined. First prize gets to have his or her design as the front cover of the book and second prize as the back cover.

The campaign has a long way to go before it reaches its target of $9 000, with just $25 pledged so far and 55 days to go before funding closes. However, the good news is that it’ll receive all funds pledged even if it doesn’t reach its target.
