Online fashion brand uses female PhD candidates as models

Most fashion models are booked for fashion spreads based on their lookbooks and experience in the industry, but for its Spring Collection online San Francisco fashion brand, Betabrand, specifically scouted for inexperienced, ordinary female doctoral candidates.

Betabrand had sent out a call via social media to submit entries for the Spring Collection shoot. Submissions were shortlisted and sixty women from around the world were chosen to feature as models.

“When you look beyond the ranks of the professionally beautiful, photography becomes a lot more fun,” Betabrand founder Chris Lindland said in a statement. “Our designers cooked up a collection of smart fashions for spring, so why not display them on the bodies of women with really big brains?”

The Spring Collection has inspired Betabrand to give women from all walks of life “a chance to model for Betabrand, without any onerous academic restrictions”, by uploading photos of themselves on the site.
