Sony’s Xperia Z2 is the best camera phone in the world

Sony’s new Xperia Z2 has won out over some hefty competition to take the title of best smartphone for mobile photography after going through the rigorous testing by the folks at DxOMark. The Xperia Z2 managed to score a combined 79 out of 100 beating out the previous leader which was, surprisingly, Nokia’s first 41 megapixel smartphone the 808 PureView from 2012.

The Xperia Z2 managed scores of 81/100 for its still-imaging prowess, which draws it level with the Nokia 808, but it then managed a 73/100 score in video testing which trounced the 68/100 that the Nokia could manage back in its day. The title of best mobile video device still belongs to GoPro’s Hero 3, which considering its function as a mobile action camera is hardly surprising.

Behind the Sony and the Nokia in DxOMark’s top five is Apple’s iPhone 5s, last year’s flagship from Sony, the Xperia Z1 and Samsung’s Galaxy S4. It will be interesting to see where Samsung’s Galaxy S5 scores after it gets tested owing to the fact that photography was such a major part of its launch last month.

We were massively impressed by Sony’s latest flagship smartphone when we saw it last month at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The Xperia Z2 uses the same 20.7 megapixel sensor as its predecessor, the Sony Xperia Z1, and the fantastic Xperia Z1 Compact that we tested last year but has an updated suite of software that seems to have made the difference at the end of the day. It also sports a faster Snapdragon 801 processor and an increase to 3GB of RAM that helped it out in the video category with the ability to record 4k video content.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is expected in South Africa in the not too distant future with some retailers already offering pre-order pages for the phone.
