Heartbleed worries lead to game name change on Steam

It was a temporary change. but change it did: recent worries over the new Heartbleed security exploit led to the PC version of South Park: The Stick of Truth having its name changed on Steam libraries to “valve please reset all partner logins because heartbleed”.

This was picked up and reported by Kotaku’s Luke Plunkett late last night. He even captured the change before it could be changed back:

Heartbleed, as you may know from our previous coverage, is a security exploit that can easily retrieve personal user information, including passwords, from internet servers. That information was previously believed to be protected by Open SSL encryption, but as we reported, a security flaw “allows attackers to read chunks of up to 64KB from a server’s memory as crypotography keys are exchanged”, and those 64kb can potentially contain unencrypted information stored in plain text format.

As a precaution, people are strongly advised to change all of the passwords they use for online services. It’s a schlep, but at this point in time the quickest and easiest way to prevent attackers gaining access to personal online accounts.
