New update essential for Windows 8.1 users

If you’re using Windows 8.1, you simply must upgrade your version of Windows to Windows 8.1 Update, or else face losing future updates from Microsoft.

That’s the word from Mary Joe Foley over at ZDNet in the US. She writes “…Microsoft is going to require all Windows 8.1 users to have Windows 8.1 Update installed if they plan to continue to download any security or feature updates to the operating system.”

That means no Windows 8.1 Update, no security patches to address vulnerabilities in the operating system for Windows 8.1 users. That may sound a little draconian, but it’s probably the best way to encourage Windows 8.1 users to do the upgrade sooner rather than later.

The update, which Microsoft has said will make Windows 8 what it should have been from the start, goes live today across the globe via Windows Update. We’ve checked our Windows 8.1 machines already today, and the patch isn’t yet available for us down here in South Africa, but it will definitely be out today sometime, so keep checking.

If you’re still on Windows 8, you’ll need to grab the 8.1 Update from the Windows Store and have at least 3GB of hard drive space available. If you’re already on Windows 8.1, you will get the new 8.1 Update directly through the Windows Update interface, once it becomes available in our region.
