AlternaTV grows up adding education & more music to the lineup

Streaming media is relatively new to South Africans, we’ve only just had access to streaming music services like Deezer or Rdio and Gareth Cliff’s venture out into the world of internet radio took everyone by surprise.

AlternaTV has been in South Africa for almost a year now and it has finally grown up into a fully fledged video streaming service that offers 24 hour music videos as well as a host of original programming covering movies and series, entertainment, fashion as well as tech and gadgets.

The news from the AlternaTV camp today is that users will no longer have to navigate to the site to get their content with the launch of an AlternaTV iOS app for both iPad and iPhone. There will also be a second music video streaming channel on offer with a ‘Pop’ channel featuring music videos from the likes of  Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Avicii joining the ‘Rock’ channel that was already in operation.

The big addition to the AlternaTV offering is MathsPod, an episodic mathematics tutorial show aimed at high school students that deals with topics like quadratic equations and limits. “MathsPod was founded on the basis of a dire need to transform the educational landscape in South Africa,” said AlternaTV’s managing director, Terence Odendaal. “This especially applies to the Maths and Science fields, which undoubtedly form the cornerstone of a robust workforce that enables sustainable job creation and economic growth.”

The AlternaTV app is available from the iTunes App Store now.
