Flappy Bird is coming back, this time with multiplayer

If you were one of the millions who got hooked on Flappy Bird earlier this year and were disappointed when the game’s creator took it offline, you’ll be happy to know that the original Flappy Bird is coming back in August. Except this time, says Joystiq, it will have multiplayer.

Dong Nguyen, the man behind the runaway hit said as much to CNBC’s Kelly Evans, who tweeted the news.

Flappy Bird proved so popular that it reached 50 million downloads in a very short period of time, largely because of how hard and frustrating it was. In case you somehow missed it, Flappy Bird challenges players to get a bird through a series of pipe gaps with screen taps that make it fly higher. While it sounds easy, believe me it’s not. I don’t think I even made it through 10 pipes, despite many retries.

Nguyen cited “ruining lives” (including his own) as the reason for pulling the game from app stores, and in its absence a huge wave of clone games followed, including one for BlackBerry 10 called Flappy Herbie Saga: Trolls of the Forest that captured the spirit of the game, if not its success.

Rolling Stone magazine said back in March that Flappy Bird’s popularity earned Nguyen a rather-enticing $50 000 a day while it was available, so it’s not difficult to imagine why he would consider reviving the game, despite the addiction it caused in so many people.

How the game will incorporate a multiplayer feature is anyone’s guess at this point. Guess we’ll just have to wait until August to find out.
