There’s no shortage of Apple fans in South Africa – most IT conferences are a wall of dull grey laptop lids these days. So how does the discerning Cupertino nut stand out? By buying a piece of original Apple’s history, of course. Yours if you have deep enough pockets to bid for it.
Two of the iconic rainbow Apple logos which hung outside of Apple’s California headquarters in the late ’70s will be up for auction on the Bonhams auction site, with the lowest bid starting at R100 000.
The two logos each measure at approximately 46 x 49 x 1 1/2 inches and 33 1/2 x 36 x 6 inches respectively. The bigger sign is made of stiff foam with 6 vinyl applied colors and the smaller sign is made of fiberglass backed with metal, vinyl applied colors.
The logos were given to a long-time Apple employee back in 1997 when they were removed from the buildings and have been in the person’s possession ever since. Both signs have a few wear-and-tear marks and are still in their original condition, meaning neither has been altered or touched up.
Although the rainbow apple is considered Apple’s first official logo, this one with Isaac Newtown sitting under an apple tree is the original one. But it only lasted one year after Steve Jobs commissioned a designer to come up with the rainbow logo.
The Bonhams auction officially begins on June 4th.
