Facebook has a new way of sharing your listening habits

As the world’s largest social media network matures, Facebook continually adds new ways for its users to share what they’re doing (and feeling) with their friends.

The latest addition to Facebook’s sharing arsenal comes in the form of an impending update to both the iOS and Android version of the app. It will allow your smartphone to listen out for TV shows, movies and music when you check in, and then add it to you posts.

In a blog post describing the new feature, Facebook product manager Aryeh Selekman said that over five billion status updates had included the additional “feelings and activities” tags on them in the last year. The good news is that the feature is completely optional and can be toggled on and off using an audio icon that appears at the top of a new status update, which will activate your smartphone’s microphone allowing it to detect what you’re busy watching.

For those of you concerned with your online privacy (which should quite frankly be everyone this morning) Facebook is promising that the sound it records from your smartphone won’t be stored anywhere, and that you will still have the ability to control which of your friends are able to see the things you post.

If you share music, your friends see a 30-second preview of the song.  For TV shows, the story in News Feed will highlight the specific season and episode you’re watching to help you avoid any spoilers… that is, of course, only if your friends are in a forgiving mood when they found out you haven’t seen the last three episodes of Game of Thrones.

We can’t help but notice the similarity of Facebook’s new feature to Shazam. It will be interesting to see if making Facebook sharing more of a passive experience will encourage users of the network to share more of what they’ve been up to.
