Steam Machines release delayed to 2015

If you’ve got your heart set on buying an off-the-shelf games console running Valve’s Steam OS, we’ve got bad news for you. Work still being done on the Steam Controller means that it looks like Steam Machines won’t be released this year after all. That’s word from Valve’s Eric Hope, who provided an update on the project at Steamcommunity.com saying that the Steam Controller – a wireless controller peripheral intended specifically for games – is in the process of being tested and tweaked, something that will likely push the release of Valve’s Steam Machines to 2015.

Steam Machines are Valve-branded pre-built gaming PCs designed specifically to run PC games at various performance levels. The idea behind them is because they’re made by Valve, a company that understands PC gaming, gamers can trust Steam Machines to run games reliably.

Hope’s exact words were “We’re now using wireless prototype controllers to conduct live playtests, with everyone from industry professionals to die-hard gamers to casual gamers. It’s generating a ton of useful feedback, and it means we’ll be able to make the controller a lot better. Of course, it’s also keeping us pretty busy making all those improvements. Realistically, we’re now looking at a release window of 2015, not 2014.”

While he doesn’t specifically say that the entire Steam Machines project will be delayed to 2015, that’s certainly how the statement reads. It’s not just Valve building Steam Machines, however: a bunch of third-party hardware-makers are also building their own version of the concept, and their sale isn’t necessarily tied to a complete and working Steam Controller.

Unless of course Valve has stipulated to its partners that you can’t have one without the other, which Valve isn’t confirming or denying. Should that prove to be the case, every Steam Machine regardless of origin won’t see the light of day until Valve finalises their controller design.

Of course, if you really can’t wait, you can just build your own today.
