A bigger, bolder QWERTY BlackBerry is on the way

Along with version 10.3 of its software development kit, BlackBerry dropped a bombshell yesterday about a new – presumably premium – phone that is in the works for later this year: a high-resolution, square-display-toting BlackBerry most likely set to come with the beleaguered company’s iconic physical QWERTY keyboard.

The company’s BlackBerry 10 SDK supports two display ratios, a 1:1 ratio like that used in the traditional QWERTY keyboard-based BlackBerry Q10 and a 16:9 aspect ratio for its full touchscreen smartphones like the Z10 and the Z30. The latest version of the SDK has a new 1440×1440 screen resolution with a pixel density of 453ppi in its simulator, which BlackBerry confirms is for an upcoming device.

That resolution and pixel density combo translate back to a display that’s 4.5 inches big, a size that would either make for an incredibly wide smartphone or a screen with very small bezels on either side of it. Considering the BlackBerry Q10 has a 3.1 inch square display and is almost as wide as Samsung’s 5 inch, diagonal-display-equipped Galaxy S4, this upcoming BlackBerry smartphone may have a tough time keeping its portly display confined to a small body.

The prospect of a bigger square display on a new BlackBerry phone is not all there is to get hopeful over. BlackBerry’s new 10.3 SDK brings a few cosmetic changes to BlackBerry 10’s overall look and feel, too, with the operating system following Apple’s iOS 7 and Samsung’s latest version of TouchWiz interface in bringing flatter design to its icons.

We’ll be keeping our eyes and ears open for this new BlackBerry phone in the coming months.
