Google says it needs to diversify it workforce

It won’t come as news to many, but the tech industry is just tiny bit dominated by a certain type of person. A certain type of white, male, middle class person, to be specific. How many tech companies are willing to admit that about themselves? To its credit, Google just did.

The search engine company recently published its employee a  report on its Diversity page revealing exactly how diverse its workforce is. According to the report, Google employees are made up of 70% men, 30% women worldwide and 61% white, 30% Asian, 3% Hispanic, 2% black, 1% mixed race, and 1% under the ‘other’ category in the US.

But what’s the point of releasing all these figures? “We’re not where we want to be when it comes to diversity. And it is hard to address these kinds of challenges if you’re not prepared to discuss them openly, and with the facts,” Google says.  “All of our efforts, including going public with these numbers, are designed to help us recruit and develop the world’s most talented and diverse people.”

Google has a number of programs including the Women @ Google, Black Googler Network, Asian Googler Network and more, each designed to reach out and recruit employees under each of the minority group represented at the company, as well as educating and uplifting various minority communities in the US and abroad.

The company also has a few youth programs and scholarships designed to ushering in the next generation of Googlers around the world, including girls and young women.

“We’re the first to admit that Google is miles from where we want to be—and that being totally clear about the extent of the problem is a really important part of the solution,” said Google human resources head Lazlo Bock.
