Mostly Harmless – Elite: Dangerous in-game factions revealed

I may not get much time to write about games these days, but there’s one that I’m going to be all over until launch. Elite: Dangerous is nearing its fourth and final Alpha release, before it goes into ‘Premium Beta‘ at the end of the month.

And there’s big news in the weekly newsletter put out by the developers at Frontier, this weekend. The three in-game factions – or Galactic Blocs, in the parlance of the game – have been announced along with a bit of backstory.

And compared to most game’s political structures, Elite’s actually look a little more detailed and experimental. There’s The Federation, in which planetary politics are conducted along the lines of a US-style democracy – complete with omnipresent media and celebrity culture. The Empire is your standard fascist space state, while The Alliance is the uncomfortable grouping of people who want nothing to do with either of the above.

There’s also details on two more systems that are being added to the Alpha now.

Dahan III, a new trading system coming up in Alpha 4.

According to the newsletter, one player in the Alpha phase (early backers who paid through Kickstarter or the Frontier store can play already) has got far enough to reach the rank of Dangerous, with 2 000 kills to their name. Which means they have 2 000 kills to their name and are two levels short of being Elite.

All the ranks from the original game. Yes, it's really hard to make it to Elite.

Elite: Dangerous is shaping up to be the only game I want to play when it’s released at the end of the year, a blend of solo play in the style of the 1980s classic or as an updated space MMO a la Eve: Online. And if you want more, here’s a final shot and the latest trailer too.
