WhatsApp competitor Telegram launches Windows Phone app

Now that WhatsApp has been hoovered up by Facebook, there’s been something of a drive among those who care about their privacy top find an alternative messaging app which is just as easy to use but offers complete message encryption and barriers to prying corporate or government eyes. Telegram, despite some early concern about its true ability to protect your chats, is pretty popular in our circles – so hurrah that there’s now an official Telegram app in the Windows Phone Store.

Interestingly, the Windows Phone version of Telegram was originally a third-party app called Ngram, until the messenger application decided to make it the official app.

Telegram gained popularity (and millions of new users) this year after Facebook bought WhatsApp, the result being that many felt uneasy about the privacy issue surrounding the deal. Telegram Messenger Beta comes with a few nifty features including large group chats of up to two hundred people at a time, video sharing up to 1 GB, end-to-end encrypted Secret Chats, no adverts, message and shared media cloud storage, and more.
