GoPro appoints former Microsoft executive as President

Action camera maker GoPro has announced that former Microsoft executive Tony Bates would be taking over the reigns as the company’s new president – and will be reporting directly to GoPro founder and CEO Nicholas Woodman.

The news come two weeks after GoPro filed for a public IPO, looking to secure $100-million in funding. The IPO filing has also spurned more rumours of a GoPro Hero 4 being launched later this month.

“It’s an honour to join the GoPro team. GoPro represents everything that excites me in a company. Incredible products, compelling content, a world-renowned brand and above all, amazing people who make it happen. Working for a technology company that creates products that people love and that capture life’s magical moments is a dream come true,” Bates said in a press statement.

While serving as Executive Vice President at Microsoft, Bates was responsible for business development, strategy and evangelism. He came as a package deal when Microsoft integrated with Skype in 2011, where he served as Skype’s CEO since 2010.

“Bates led an aggressive effort to increase its user base and extend services beyond recreational and video calling. At the time of acquisition, he had introduced premium phone and video services and grown the monthly Skype user base to 170 million connected users per month,” GoPro added.

Woodman explained that he is excited for Bates to be joining the team, together with new appointee Peter Gotcher aspart of GoPro’s Audit Committee.

“I’m fired up to have two seasoned technology veterans like Tony and Peter join our team. Their passion and experience will help us realize our vision for enabling people to self-capture and share engaging personal content. As President of GoPro, Tony will focus on our core business as well as scaling GoPro’s fast-growing media operations,” he said.
