Takealot founders launch new online shopping site

A new local online shopping site called Raru has been launched by Neil Smith, Waine Smith and Jose Pereira. Coincidentally, they also happen to be the original founders of Takelot.

The three founders launched Raru after the end of the three-year restraint of trade that was enacted after they sold Takealot, originally known as Take 2.

Raru is very similar to Takelot, offering more or less the same range of products such as movies, video games, books, electronics and music.

“The initial focus is on products which we know well – gaming, music, movies and electronic,” said Raru co-founder Neil Smith. “We are looking to grow their product range, but it will be guided by what works for the site. There will be a strong focus on customer experience and we will try to resolve any problems as quickly as possible, and keep customers informed throughout the process,” Neil Smith told My Broadband.

“The biggest goal at the moment is to fix all the site bugs as they occur. After that we will be rolling out new delivery services and product ranges, including some of the most requested features.”

Raru faces stiff competition from its alma mater, of course. Two weeks ago Takealot received a huge R1 billion investment from Tiger to expand its services.
