Football with a faded field: World Cup Instagram launched

Remember the days when sports photographers would mass around the goal ends with their enormous cameras and torpedo-sized lenses? Well, you can put that pricey photo kit away: apparently that’s not enough for this year’s World Cup tournament which kicks off this week: organiser FIFA is honing in on the mobile generation with the launch of an Instagram account designed to aggregate fan pics and official feeds with a faux vignette.

The FIFAWorldCup account will feature snaps from live games, top players and teams, back-stage scenes, Brazilian city life, beaches and celebrations. Fans can also share their own photos on Instagram showing how they are watching and enjoying the tournament, using the hashtag #myworldcup. The best photos will then be selected and posted on the FIFAWorldCup account. You can also interact with FIFA on Facebook and Twitter or like the FIFA World Cup page on Facebook and follow it on Twitter.

FIFAWorldCup is quickly gaining popularity on the photo sharing site, with more than 22 000 already following the account.

“The official 2014 FIFA World Cup Instagram account will reach new audiences who love exclusive, beautiful imagery from the tournament. We look forward to seeing how the fans are enjoying the event worldwide and sharing the best highlights across the official FIFA digital platforms,” said Matt Stone, Head of FIFA Digital.
