How Far Cry 4 co-op will work if you don’t own the game

So Far Cry 4 is coming this year, and it will bring drop-in multiplayer that will let friends join you wherever you are and help you fight the bad guys. But more importantly, Ubisoft said at E3 that your friend won’t even need a copy of the game in order to do that.

Just how will it work, then? That’s the question Eurogramer answered recently: with an app.

Apparently all your potential co-op partners need do is download an app from the respective marketplaces containing all of the game’s multiplayer files (no single-player missions will need to be downloaded). Naturally, that will be quite a hefty download but once it’s installed, it will handle the main game’s invites and allow Far Cry 4-less friends to join your game.

But don’t expect co-op play to be a cheap way to make the game easier – the developers are looking at ways of making playing with friends more difficult than playing on your own. It’s unclear how that will work, exactly, or even if gamers will like the idea, but that’s what the game’s technical director Cedric Decelle told Eurogamer.

Still, it’s an interesting move for Ubisoft, and excellent news for cheap Far Cry fans who want to play the game co-op with their mates but who don’t necessarily want to pay for a single-player campaign they may never play.
