Facebook diversity report: “We have a lot of work to do”

Google seems to have set off a new trend among big tech companies after it released its workforce diversity report. First, Yahoo followed when it revealed its own numbers and now Facebook has laid its cards on the table with its own diversity report – it looks like the social media bigwig has some work to do.

According to Facebook, its global workforce is made up of:

  • 69% male and 31% female overall
  • 85% of its employees in  the tech division (developers, engineers etc.) are male, while only 15% are female
  • 53% of its employees in the non-tech division are male and 47% are female.
  • 77% male and 23% female employees at senior level

In the US, the workforce overall is:

  • 57% White
  • 34% Asian
  • 4% Hispanic
  • 3% mixed
  • 2% Black

Compared to Google and Yahoo’s reports, the numbers aren’t all that different, although Yahoo still has a better ratio in terms of overall gender globally and ethnicity in the US.

Like both Google and Yahoo, Facebook says it’s working to change these numbers for the better through the programmes it has in place to address the lack of gender and racial diversity in the company.

“At Facebook, diversity is essential to achieving our mission. We build products to connect the world, and this means we need a team that understands and reflects many different communities, backgrounds and cultures,” the company says.

“Diversity is something that we’re treating as everyone’s responsibility at Facebook, and the challenge of finding qualified but underrepresented candidates is one that we’re addressing as part of a strategic effort across Facebook.”

The Facebook University internship, Employee Resource Groups and partnerships with the Anita Borg Institute Girls Who Code, Code 2040, National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Hispanic Professional Engineersand Management Leadership for Tomorrow are examples of programmes Facebook is currently running.

“We have a long way to go, but we’re absolutely committed to achieving greater diversity at Facebook and across the industry.”
