Want to know what sort of achievements you’ll be going after when Destiny comes out in September? A surprisingly candid weekly update on the Bungie website has spilled the beans on that, and many other burning questions relating to publisher Activision and studio Bungie’s upcoming shoot-and-looter MMO thing.

Fans have also been asking about the actual costs involved since the announcement earlier this year that publisher Activision has poured somewhere in the region of $500 million into the game’s creation and marketing. The short answer? No, that’s not how much it has cost Bungie to make the game.
When asked the question directly, chief operating officer of Bungie Pete Parsons said “For marketing you’d have to ask Activision people, but for development costs, not anything close to $500 million. I think that speaks a lot more to the long-term investment that we’re making in the future of the product.”
So basically, that monstrous figure is more about how much Activision is spending on the series as a whole to make it a smash-hit they can milk for cash for the foreseeable future. It’s a smart strategy, but also quite a gamble as it relies quite heavily on Destiny being bigger and more popular than a whole host of games. While we enjoyed the alpha, it’s not yet clear on how a wider audience will take to it.
Something we – and many others – noticed in our time with the alpha a few weeks back was the terribly bored-sounding performance of the player’s AI companion, Ghost. It was almost too robotic, even for a robot, a surprise as the actor behind it was none other than Peter Dinklage of Game of Thrones fame. Gamers expressed their concern on forums the internet over, and Bungie listened.
This update provided the answer: No, Dinklage’s performance is not final and has in fact already been updated, and gamers will see just how that has been done during the upcoming beta test which kicks off on the 17th of July for anyone who has pre-ordered the game. Even that dialogue isn’t final: “It will be updated again for launch on September 9th, as well,” the update said.
So yes, Bungie is still hard at work on Destiny to get it ready for launch on September 9th, 2014.
