Popular social networking site Facebook went dark for a few minutes this morning (Thursday). Judging by the panicked reactions to the outage across other social media, the outage seems to affected most people around the world.
During the downtime, when you navigated to any Facebook page or profile, a notification was displayed on screen simply read “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can.”
No explanation has been given yet, but the instant reactions across the world undermine how curiously rare this kind of outage in this day and age.

An account that appears to be a parody (it could be real I guess) of Zimbabwe’s governing party tried to take credit on behalf of a Mr Mugabe of Harare:
We thank comrades in China for their technical support and we believe this is a major victory for the progressive world. We shut Facebook!

And our favourite Tweet on the subject:
You know you don't use Facebook much when you discover that it's down from your Twitter timeline.

Meanwhile, the crisis continued for people around the world. We reckon it was about five minutes here, The Guardian in the UK is reporting it was 20 minutes there.
Inserting its url in the website isitup.com, the result confirmed that it was having connectivity issues around the globe.
