As of today, you’ll be able to upload animated GIFs onto Twitter via the web or its Android and iOS apps.
Twitter made the announcement via its @Support account (click on the image to play the GIF). GIFs won’t automatically play on your timeline, instead, they will appear with a play icon such as the one on videos and you can only view them by tapping on the icon.
Starting today, you can share and view animated GIFs on http://t.co/wJD8Fp317i, Android and iPhone. http://t.co/XBrAbOm4Ya

This now makes it much easier to upload GIFs as previously, you could only do so by using third-party services like Twitpic or Giphy.
Go ahead and try it out for yourself by tapping the photo icon in the text box and selecting the GIF you want to upload.
