The Z3 brings BlackBerry 10 on a budget to SA

Beleaguered smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry is on the way to recovery having turned a small profit in the first three months of its financial year. Today the company announced that the first entry level BlackBerry 10 smartphone, the BlackBerry Z3, is coming to South Africa.

The BlackBerry Z3 runs on a dual core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor with 1.5 GB of RAM with 8GB of built in storage that can be expanded by up to 32GB using microSD cards. The 5 inch display has a 540×960 resolution which is not going to win any awards for pixel density but compares to other smartphones in its price bracket like Samsung’s Galaxy S4. On the back you’ll find a 5 megapixel camera and connectivity wise you’re looking at 802.11n WiFi as well as Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to peripherals.

Software wise the BlackBerry Z3 is running the latest version of the BlackBerry 10.2.1 which has the added benefit of being able to install Android applications natively.

The BlackBerry Z3 is the first phone to come out of the collaboration between BlackBerry and Foxconn – the company most notable for building the Apple iPhone. It took just five months to go from concept to reality as BlackBerry look to get new models out and on sale faster.

The BlackBerry Z3 will cost R2 999 cash and will be available through Vodacom from mid July on the Smart S plan contract for R249. There will also be an exclusive app offer in the month of July with 20 normally paid for apps worth R430 available for free to customers who buy the BlackBerry Z3.
