Massive Brazillian Samsung heist reads like script for GTAV add-on

Either modern-day thieves are getting more brazen, or they’re paying a lot more attention to heists pulled off in popular entertainment if a recent robbery at a Samsung factory located in Campinas, Sao Paulo is any indication.

Even Reuters admits that the theft of R360million’s worth of tablets, notebooks and smartphones on Sunday night, which they reported on, “reads like the script of a daring crime movie”. We could add it also sounds like something Michael, Franklin and Trevor from Grand Theft Auto V would do if given half a chance.

Towards midnight on Sunday night, seven thieves dressed like factory employees hijacked a shuttle bus that was taking eight employees home from Samsung’s Campinas factory; they set six of them free and used the remaining two to get past security.

Once in, they disarmed the security guards and rounded up factory employees, forcing them to remove the batteries from their cell phones so they couldn’t call the cops. Another thirteen robbers then drove seven vans into the factory, and over the next four hours they proceeded to load up with Samsung notebooks, smartphones and tablets.

The gang left the factory fully-laden and without hurting anyone in the early hours of Monday morning.

The thieves appeared to be competent, analytical and able to execute their mission with what could be called military precision; Reuters says they communicated with each other using radios and cell phones the whole time, plus they apparently knew where all the high-value goods were. They were also covered from head to toe, so the video footage of the robbery released to the media later that day couldn’t identify them.

Except for the lack of violence, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a heist straight out of Grand Theft Auto game, or a Hollywood blockbuster.

Then again, perhaps it’s not so far fetched after all. There’s still no news about the massive and equally improbable Bieber/Bon Jovi robbery at Soccer City last year.
