Today marks 45 years since the landing of the first man on the moon

Talk about time flying. Today marks the 45th anniversary of the Apollo moon landings and astronaut Neil Armstrong’s famous phrase about relative sizes of steps when he became the first man on the moon on 20th July 1969.

Armstrong and fellow NASA astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins set off from the Kennedy Space Centre on the Apollo 11 spacecraft on a trip to the moon on the afternoon of 16th July, landing on the moon four days later on the evening of 20th July. The event made history and was witnessed worldwide on live television. Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins rounded up their eight-day trip, returning to earth as heroes on 24th July

NASA has marked the occasion with a number of events that kicked off on Friday, including a talk given by Buzz Aldrin at the Intrepid Space and Science Festival at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York. Today, NASA will mark the exact moment Neil Armstrong opened the spacecraft hatch to take his first step on the moon by replaying the restored footage of the historic moment on NASA TV.
