Elite: Dangerous Beta 1 released

I had hoped to be playing the first full public beta of David Braben’s space sim sequel Elite: Dangerous last night, but timezone shenanigans means that a release date of 29th July actually means the 30th here, boo. All is forgiven though thanks to rather spectacular new features list which is apparently inside the new client I’m currently downloading.

Beta 1 means that a new swathe of players can take their Sidewinder ships into the Elite: Dangerous universe, for around half the price of Premium Beta access (which is now closed). In Earth money that’s £50, or about R900.

The new build brings player-to-player communications, through text and voice, an early version of the mission system, trade routes, private group play, two new ships and the option to buy a docking computer (although frankly this will take a lot of the elegance out of the game).

Most importantly, the playable universe now includes 55 star systems (eventually there will be 400 billion…) and 10 times the amount of space to fly through.

In other words, players will get a much better idea of what the finished game will play like.

Hopefully I’ll get chance to play before the weekend and will report back with first impressions as soon as possible. In the meantime, check out our dedicated Elite: Dangerous South Africa forum here.
