Games with Gold for August announced

August’s free games on Microsoft’s Games with Gold programme actually look pretty good: Xbox One owners get Crimson Dragon and Strike Suit Zero: Director’s Cut, while Xbox 360 owners get Motocross Madness and Dishonored.

In an interesting twist, instead of making the Xbox One games available in the first and second halves of the month, both can be downloaded all month long while the two Xbox 360 titles follow the usual pattern: Motocross Madness is available from August 1-15 and Dishonored from August 16-31.

Yes, Dishonored. Microsoft has taken some flak for offering older games as rewards for Gold membership, and while Dishonored isn’t the newest game (it came out in 2012), it’s one of the best stealth FPSes out there and well worth your time. I’m very happy to see it in the line-up, and encourage all who haven’t yet played it to grab it on the 16th.

And remember, Games with Gold isn’t like Sony’s PlayStation Plus: should you grab any of these games while they’re on offer, they’re yours to keep, forever, as opposed to for however long they’re part of the programme.

Xbox Live Gold membership isn’t particularly expensive; you can pick up a 12 month subscription for R460 from mspoints.co.za, which works out to R38.33 a month. While Microsoft doesn’t always give away amazing games in their Games with Gold programme, less than the price of two cups of coffee is a pretty good price to pay each month for multiplayer access, discounts and “free” games.
