No PS3-to-PS4 upgrade discount for The Last of Us

Owners of The Last of Us on PS3 hoping for some sort of discount on the Remastered PS4 version of the game are out of luck: one of the bigwigs on Sony’s EU blog confirmed yesterday that no such offer is on the table.

While that’s a bit of a blow to many fans, there is a bright side: the price of the bundle was mentioned as $39.99. That’s only around R440 and it includes all of the game’s downloadable content. It’s also low for a PlayStation 4 game, as many new titles cost as much as R799.

The same blog post went on to talk about the look and feel of the Remastered version, saying how Naughty Dog targeted a 60 frames per second (fps) frame rate which resulted in a much smoother camera and more natural aiming and controls. There is also an option to lock the frame rate at a guaranteed 30 frames per second in case 60fps feels too fast.

The biggest jumps in visual quality, however, come from the game’s new 1080p resolution (up from the PS3’s 720p) and the more detailed textures Naughty Dog was able to squeeze from the engine. As such some of the touches that you may have missed the first time around are more noticeable; subtle things like blood running down Joel’s arm when he’s injured and the weave of his shirt.

(I was only too happy at the news that the jagged edges that occasionally marred the original game’s presentation will be nowhere to be seen in Remastered. I hate jaggies.)
