Shazam for iOS gets streaming music from Rdio

Shazam has become an indispensable tool for music discovery. Today, users of iOS app will be able to download version 7.7 of Shazam which will, for the first time, bring the ability to stream a full song inside of the app from streaming music provider Rdio.

Rdio and Shazam already have a relationship that allows users to send the songs that have been tagged by Shazam to a playlist in Rdio – I personally use this service and have found it to work seamlessly. The new agreement will allow Rdio users to play the full track inside the Shazam app without needing to open up Rdio.

“We are thrilled to be the first streaming service to power Shazam’s new in-app song playback,” said Chris Becherer, the senior vice president of product at Rdio. “This partnership helps us deliver on our promise to be everywhere music is being discovered.”

Bechrer’s statement opens up to the fact that the service may not stay exclusively through Rdio with similar integration for Spotify playlists already available in countries that offer the Spotify streaming service.

(At the moment the Shazam App for Windows Phone doesn’t even have the ability to send tagged songs to a Rdio playlist. It also isn’t specifically mentioned in the update blog post, so don’t expect streaming from Rdio any time soon.)

For the moment the new feature is only available on iOS, however Rdio has promised that the feature will make its way into the Android application shortly.
