Smaller G3 announced by LG

As South Africa gears up for the local launch of LG’s latest G3 smartphone, the South Korean electronics giant has gone one step further and announced a smaller, more compact version of the unit.

To be known as the LG G3 Beat, it is positioned as mid-tier variation of the current G3 smartphone and will also feature the Laser Auto Focus technology and Floating Arc metallic design. But the model will be slightly smaller – a full 5-inches as opposed to 5.5-inches of the G3.

“The LG G3 Beat was developed to address the growing low- to mid-tier segment of smartphone customers who want a great device that’s more compact but still powerful enough to run the most popular apps. With the fast pace of technology in the wireless industry, it’s now more possible than ever to offer a smartphone that does all this but at a lower price point than was previously possible,” LG said in a media statement.

In terms of hardware, it has a 2 540mAh battery, 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 8GB of memory and 1GB RAM. The rear camera is 8 megapixels with the aforementioned Laser Auto Focus, while the front camera is 1.3 megapixels.

The Beat will run on Android 4.4.2, connect to 4G LTE and HSPA+, as well as WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0, and NFC. While the G3 measured 146.3 x 74.6 x 8.9 mm, the Beat is 137.7 x 69.6 x 10.3mm, so it is slightly thicker.

“Smartphone manufacturers cannot ignore this growing segment of consumers who want the best balance of looks, features, performance and, of course, price,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company in the statement.

“The LG G3 Beat represents our commitment to the mid-tier smartphone market that demands mature technology, proven branding, great innovation and attractive price, all in a single device.”

The G3 Beat will first be made available in South Korea tomorrow, after which it will roll out to other nations in Europe in the coming weeks.
