Naspers, Yola and Mxit are the top three biggest internet companies in South Africa, while Naspers is among the top three biggest internet companies in the world, according to research by global market researcher World Startup Wiki.

Naspers is valued at an estimated $52 billion (around R520 billion) and is the only company in Africa that falls within the billion dollar bracket. Yola is the second biggest company in the country with an estimated value of $90 million (around R90 million), while despite seeing a big loss in active user numbers the past year, Mxit is third with an estimated value of $48 million (around R480 million).

Algeria, Ethiopia and Kenya are also featured on the list of 50 countries examined. The top company in each country are:

  • Algeria – Ouedkniss, valued at an estimated $3.5 million
  • Ethiopia – DIRETUBE, valued at an estimated $1.5 million
  • Kenya – One Africa Media, valued at an estimated $80 million

World Startup Wiki examined 150 companies from 50 countries around the world to determine each country’s top three internet companies. Although Asia dominates the top 1 list with 5 Asian companies featured, Google came out tops overall with an estimated value of $410 billion, that’s more than the combined value of all the other 49 countries’ top company.

The research also found that ecommerce and internet search companies were the most popular, making up 23% of the total 150 companies featured, while internet search and gaming companies are the oldest.
