[GROUPTEST] Which low-cost camera is right for you?

No-one is disputing that photography can be an expensive hobby, but for the same argument it doesn’t necessarily have to be.  Sure there are camera bodies and lens kits that would cost a pretty penny to acquire and maintain, but there are also much cheaper options out there.

It’s tempting to say that you’re better off just using your phone for photos – and indeed many people do. But the truth is that its only really expensive phones that tend to come with a decent camera on board. If you’re not tempted to splash out R10 000 on a top end smartphone, you’re still better off with a low cost handset and one of the feature packed but affordable compact cameras that are doing the rounds at the moment.

Many have WiFi and photo editing tools built in, so you can share online direct from the camera in exactly the same way as a smartphone, but they’ll take much better shots thanks to larger imaging sensors and decent zoom lenses.

But which should you choose? Here’s three of the best that cost less than R2 500.
