‘Unsubscribe’ button to be made more prominent in Gmail

How often have you received an email newsletter from a website that you don’t remember subscribing to? All too often, we imagine. But Gmail is trying to rectify the issue by rolling out an Unsubscribe button to mails from forums, social networks and brands.

Most of these mails already have an unsubscribe button embedded in the email somewhere, but they are usually hard to find, or not clearly visible. The new trick from Gmail is to find the link and place it in a prominent position in the body text – right where you will see it.

“Now when a sender includes an “Unsubscribe” link in a Promotions, Social or Forums message, Gmail will surface it to the top, right next to the sender address. If you’re interested in the message’s content, it won’t get in the way, and if not, it’ll make it easier to keep your inbox clutter-free,” Google explained in a blog post.

Google is trying to make mail an effortless experience, and it added that by moving the unsubscribe link to where you can see it, you are less likely to mark correspondence as spam.

“Making the unsubscribe option easy to find is a win for everyone. For email senders, their mail is less likely to be marked as spam and for you, you can now say goodbye to sifting through an entire message for that one pesky link.”
