New Call of Duty multiplayer unveiled, and it looks fantastic

Since May’s unveil of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, the big question on everyone’s minds has been “What is the multiplayer going to be like?” Specifically, whether the cool new weapons, exoskeletons and tools seen in the single-player footage would make their way into – and significantly change – the franchise’s popular multiplayer portion

Tonight, that question was answered with a reveal event ahead of this week’s Gamescom conference. Shown off were new weapons, double jumps, boost jumps and a new Titanfall-like verticality to levels, all made possible by the game’s extensive use of futuristic “exoskeletons”.

These exoskeletons come with what Activision calls customisable “exo abilities” – cloak, hover, shield and more – that operate off the exo’s battery and which give players  an edge in combat when used tactically. Developer Sledgehammer Games has also included a huge number of player customisation options that border on the ridiculous and –  don’t stop me if you’ve heard this somewhere before – levels that change as you play. Credit where it’s due, though, this is a pretty fantastic reveal:

While certainly cool, and a welcome change for Call of Duty, I can’t help but think they’re cribbing a bit from Titanfall’s jetpacking soldiers and Battlefield 4’s ever-changing battlescapes. But naturally the proof is in the playing, and there’s a good chance there will be some good old fashioned CODness to it all that makes it all feel fresh and new. Here’s hoping.

If the video wasn’t enough to satisfy your curiosity, head over to PC Gamer’s website where you can watch the entire reveal event, including some of the developers talking about cool new features not seen in the unveil video.

Whatever you think about the Call of Duty franchise, there’s little doubt in my mind that Activision’s three-year, three-studio development plan that has one studio working for three years on each new game – of which this is the first – is going to pay off, big time.

Thoughts, comments, opinions?
